Message from the Director

Dr. Michelle Chan, Director of IFYP
The International Foundation Year Programme (IFYP) aims to provide our students with an all-rounded education and a decent learning experience. This is a two-term foundation programme specifically designed for international students who are interested in consolidating their knowledge and preparing themselves for further education. The programme will build students’ foundation in the areas of business studies, data analysis, psychology, social science and languages.

Besides academic intelligence, this programme will also support our students in understanding themselves and their potential. We believe joining IFYP will be a good opportunity for students to move beyond their comfort zones. Students will engage in new challenges, learn new things, and meet new people. We hope that students can prove themselves, move forward, and more importantly, embrace their lives and realize great goals.

The International Foundation Year Programme (IFYP) is designed to equip students from different countries with the skills and knowledge to study undergraduate courses at HKSYU. Students will learn about basic business administration, data analysis and applications, psychology, and sociology. By studying our language enhancement courses, students will also improve their language skills in English and Chinese.

HKSYU was established in 1971 and holds the distinction of being the first private university in Hong Kong. It is ranked as 342 in the QS Asia University Rankings in 2025, making it the highest-ranked private and self-funded institution in Hong Kong.

HKSYU offers academic studies, accommodations, scholarships, student societies, and an education pathway for IFYP students. After fulfilling the graduation requirements of IFYP, students can continue their bachelor’s degree at HKSYU.

Learning Experience in HKSYU

Khan Meelad (2025/26 Sept IFYP student)
I am really glad I chose this foundation programme—it gave me a strong base in many areas, such as Marketing, English, Psychology, Data Science, and both Cantonese and Mandarin. I had the chance to explore different subjects, and the teachers were kind, supportive, and taught in a very effective way. Their guidance boosted my confidence and helped me feel certain about the undergraduate path I want to take. The field trips were also a memorable highlight that I will always cherish. After completing the foundation year, I feel more hopeful, confident, and excited to begin my undergraduate studies at Shue Yan University!

Muazzam Khizar (2025/26 Sept IFYP student)
The International Foundation Year at Hong Kong Shue Yan University is a one-year preparatory programme designed for students who do not meet direct undergraduate entry requirements. It bridges the gap by enhancing academic English, subject-specific knowledge, and study skills essential for university success. Delivered on campus, the programme offers a supportive environment with small class sizes, preparing students for seamless progression into Shue Yan’s undergraduate degrees. It is an excellent pathway for international students seeking a solid foundation for higher education in Hong Kong.

Butt Ammar Ahmad (2025/26 Sept IFYP student)

Studying in Shue Yan’s IFYP programme has been a transformative experience. The interdisciplinary approach and emphasis on critical thinking have broadened my perspective on global issues. The faculty’s expertise and support have been invaluable, and the diverse student body has fostered meaningful cultural exchange and networking. Experiential learning opportunities have made my education more engaging and relevant. I am grateful to be part of the IFYP community at Shue Yan, where I am gaining the skills and knowledge needed to tackle real-world challenges.
